(958) I Love You(s) is a multimedia installation that explores the layered implications behind the act of declaring one’s love to another. The inspiration for the work stems from being in a committed relationship for almost 3 years (more precisely, 958 days) without verbally declaring my love to my partner despite feeling the force of this expectation inherent in the progression of a romantic relationship.

An intimate moment where my partner and I exchange declarations for the first time was created and photographed. The result is a staged image containing the captioned text, ‘I love you.’Using a photographic print, photocopies, a jigsaw puzzle, and candies, the installation investigates the meaning, validity, and power of the words, ‘I love you,’ and the evolution of their implications when those words are repeated over time.

Last month, I was invited by LGBT organization Coming Out to participate in the Festival of Queer Culture, which began in 2009, and takes place every September in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Last year, due to complaints from public organizations concerning the subject matter of the festival, their exhibition space was closed by authorities a day before the opening. The exhibition was moved to an old garage. This year, despite provocations at the opening and media censorship, all of the festival events were held in their full form. For more information on the festival, visit their website.

Two group shows that I’m a part of are closing at the end of the month.
The first is Exposure 2011 at the PRC in Boston, which runs until August 20. Installation views of the show on Flickr, and a review by Mark Feeney at the Boston Globe. Not too far away in Philadelphia is A Love Supreme at the PPAC, which closes on August 27. Installation views of the show here, and a review by Chip Schwartz at The Art Blog.

Here are some installation shots of At the Same Time, a touring exhibition featuring Zachary Ayotte, Ted Kerr, Colin Quinn & Oisín Share (aka Quinnford & Scout), and myself. It’s currently at The Artery in Edmonton, AB until March 7. Next, it’s heading overseas to Manchester, where it will be shown at Islington Mill from April 3 - 17.

The response we’ve been getting has been really wonderful.
Here’s a nice review from Xtra.ca.
